Netball Rehabilitation and Return to Play
Successful rehabilitation needs to reflect the physical and technical demands of netball. Simply reducing pain or restoring movement is rarely enough to prepare an athlete for the realities of competition.
Netball places significant demands on the body through repeated jumping and landing, rapid acceleration and deceleration, frequent changes of direction, pivoting, and high-speed movement. These demands can place considerable stress on the knees, ankles, hips, and lower back, particularly when players are returning from injury.
At Foundation Clinic, our rehabilitation programmes are designed to restore not only function but also the strength, power, confidence, and movement quality required to safely return to the court.
Single-Leg Stability and Balance
Netball is largely played on one leg. Whether landing from a rebound, changing direction, or preparing to pass, players require excellent single leg control and stability.
Our rehabilitation programmes focus on restoring balance, lower limb control, and stability through progressive exercises that challenge strength, coordination, and movement quality in sport specific positions.
Jumping and Landing Mechanics
Jumping and landing are integral parts of netball and are common mechanisms for both knee and ankle injuries.
We assess and retrain landing mechanics to improve force absorption, reduce excessive stress on the joints, and improve movement efficiency. This forms a key component of rehabilitation following ankle sprains, knee injuries, and ACL reconstruction.
Change of Direction and Agility
Netball requires athletes to repeatedly accelerate, decelerate, pivot, and change direction at speed.
As rehabilitation progresses, we incorporate agility and change of direction drills that replicate the demands of training and match play. This helps restore confidence while preparing players for the unpredictable nature of competition.
Strength and Conditioning for Netball
Strength is a critical component of both injury recovery and injury prevention.
Our physiotherapists combine hands-on treatment with gym-based rehabilitation programmes that target lower limb strength, power development, trunk control, and overall athletic capacity. These programmes are tailored to the individual athlete and their stage of recovery.
Force Plate Testing and Return to Play
We utilise force plate testing to provide objective data throughout rehabilitation.
Force plate assessments allow us to evaluate jumping performance, landing mechanics, asymmetries, balance, strength, and power output. This information helps guide rehabilitation decisions and provides valuable insight into an athlete's readiness to return to training and competition.
For players recovering from ACL injuries, objective testing plays a particularly important role in identifying deficits that may increase the risk of re-injury and ensuring return-to-play decisions are based on performance rather than timeframes alone.
Injury Prevention for Netball Players
Prevention is an important part of every rehabilitation programme.
Through strength training, movement retraining, landing mechanics education, and performance testing, we help players reduce their risk of future knee and ankle injuries while improving their ability to perform throughout the season.
Ongoing Support Throughout Your Recovery
Successful rehabilitation requires more than a set of exercises.
You'll receive regular guidance, clear progressions, ongoing reassessment, and access to facilities that support every stage of recovery. Our goal is to help you return to netball stronger, more confident, and physically prepared for the demands of the game.
