Pelvic physiotherapists are musculoskeletal physiotherapists who have completed specialised training in the assessment and treatment of pelvic health problems affecting both men and women.
Using evidence-based techniques, our pelvic physiotherapists help restore optimal pelvic floor function and movement, improving overall quality of life. There are many conditions classified under pelvic health.
An internal pelvic floor assessment is the most effective way to evaluate pelvic floor muscle function. An internal examination can include either an internal vaginal or internal rectal examination. Pelvic health physiotherapists have specific training to perform these assessments.
This type of assessment doesn’t need to happen in your first session, and there’s never any pressure to proceed unless you feel completely comfortable and ready.
Emma McCosh and Laura How are our pelvic health physiotherapists based at Foundation Clinic in Taupo. They are friendly, warm and professional practitioners who help patients feel at ease.
Emma is our Senior Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, experienced in treating both men's and women’s health. She is qualified to perform internal assessments, including speculum exams, and can fit pessaries to help manage incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
Laura is a Physiotherapist and Pelvic Health Specialist with a passion for helping patients improve their pelvic health. She regularly upskills her knowledge through advanced pelvic health training to ensure her assessments and treatments are current, accurate, and tailored to your needs.

The following issues could indicate you have a weak pelvic floor:
At Foundation Clinic, our qualified Pelvic Health Physiotherapists will work with you to identify and treat the issues you are experiencing.
Your initial appointment typically begins with a thorough consultation to understand your history, concerns, and goals. This is followed by physical and functional assessments to evaluate your posture, movement patterns, and pelvic floor function. If appropriate and with your consent, an internal examination may be offered.
Once we have a clear understanding of what’s going on, we will create a personalised treatment plan. This may include home exercises, hands-on manual therapy, education, and strategies for symptom management.
Follow-up care is tailored to your needs, and the duration of treatment will vary depending on the nature and complexity of your condition.
Pelvic floor problems can be caused by a range of factors, including pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, aging, and certain medical conditions.
For men, pelvic floor dysfunction often occurs following prostate surgery, with at least 95% experiencing incontinence after prostatectomy. These issues can affect bladder and bowel control and overall quality of life.
For women, the physical strain of pregnancy and delivery on the body is a common cause. Up to 80% experience incontinence during pregnancy, and around 30% continue to have symptoms after giving birth. Physiotherapy plays an important role in postnatal care to strengthen the pelvic floor.
